Vigilantes are threatening to kill urban menace

  • Distraught and angry Perth residents are vowing to take the law into their own hands to rid themselves of barking dogs.

Frustrated, and being driven towards the point of nervous breakdown, homeowners are complaining that neither local government or the courts are supporting them in their concerns.

A seriously ill Jarrahdale women with three autistic children has even enlisted the support of a leading psychiatrist in order to motivate the local shire into taking action.

Two German Shepherd's have often been recorded barking for over six hours per day less than fifty metres from her home.

"They bark day and night", said the women, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisals.

"The dog owners are often at home during long barking sessions, but they take no action. A person only has to walk down the street, or in the adjacent park to set them off. The Shire Ranger would only have to get out of his car and walk a few feet for him to hear this menace for himself", she said.

Jarrah Bark gets frequent emails and telephone calls from residents saying that they are "being driven mad" by the constant barking.

A consulting psychologist told Jarrah Bark that indeed people can become stressed almost to the point of "madness" by constantly barking dogs. "I have even had to suggest to people that they need to move homes to avoid long term stress and illness" she said.

Many local government authorities seem to lack the resources or the will to tackle a problem that is having a serious detrimental effect on Perth living.

It should be a fundamental right that people are entitled to the quiet enjoyment of their home and property without inconsiderate neighbours ruining it for them.

Rangers and the courts must make a serious statement and take action before the threats to kill dogs are carried out with potentially far more serious consequences.
